
As the trade union and labour movements grew in the late nineteenth century, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labour. The Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organised the first parade in New York City, promoted "Labor Day." Oregon was the first state in the United States to declare it a public holiday in 1887. By the time Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states in the United States were officially celebrating it.
