She made her Broadway debut in 1981 in the play The Philadelphia Story. She has since appeared in a number of films and television show  including Amadeus (1984) James White (2015) and A Quiet Passion (2016).In addition to her acting career Nixon is also a political activist. She is a vocal advocate for education reform and LGBTQ rights.
