Every year on April 14th, National Pan American Day is observed to remember the First International Conference of American States, which ended on that date in 1890. The celebration occurs throughout Pan American Week.
James G. Blane, then-secretary of state of the United States, was the person who initially came up with the idea of an International Conference for the Western Hemisphere. The conference finally started in October 1889 after over ten years. The conference, which was held in Washington, D.C., covered a wide range of topics, including commerce, currency, and banking.
