On August 24, 1853, a dissatisfied patron of a restaurant repeatedly returning his thick and wet potatoes to the cook. Chef George Crum chose to cook the potatoes till crisp while adding more salt and slicing them as thinly as he could. The chef was shocked when the client praised them. As "Saratoga Chips," the fried potatoes quickly gained popularity on the restaurant's menu.The nation's favourite snack item is honoured on March 14 with National Potato Chip Day.
